Drowning

Parents and caregivers need to understand the dangers of drowning and know the proper steps to take to protect children. You can find more information here about drowning statistics in the U.S.

Drain Entrapment

  • Drain entrapment is a horrifying and often deadly tragedy.
  • The suction force of the water is so strong that even healthy adults would struggle to pry themselves off the drain.
  • Underwater entrapment can lead to the disembowelment of victims, typically children two to six years old.
  • Young children have direct access to the bottom pool drain especially in wading pools, because of the shallow water.
  • When the child's buttocks covers the drain opening, the resulting suction force can eviscerate the child through the ruptured rectum.

Solution

While there are many types of anti-entrapment systems available, Vac-Alert Industries and Stingl Products offer Safety Vacuum Release Systems (SVRS). These systems are among the easiest, most effective and inexpensive to install. In addition, fencing, pool covers, pool chemicals management and adult supervision are other key elements to create a comprehensive pool safety plan during this summer's pool season.

As mandated by the Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act all public pools are required to install anti-entrapment drain covers as an additional layer of protection to prevent against entrapment accidents.

The Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act was enacted by Congress and signed by President Bush on December 19, 2007.

Designed to prevent the tragic and hidden hazard of drain entrapments and eviscerations in pools and spas, the law became effective on December 19, 2008.

Under the law, all public pools and spas must have ASME/ANSI A112.19.8-2007 compliant drain covers installed and a second anti-entrapment system installed, when there is only a single main drain.
